First settled in 1656 by Josiah Stanborough, Sagaponack takes its name from the Shinnecock word for “land of the big ground nuts.” This refers to the village’s supply of ground nuts (not, as typically misattributed, a reference to the local potato farms). Schools
Sagaponack schools fall under the Sagaponack Common School District. The district operates one school, the Sagaponack School, which is believed to be one of the final “one-room” schoolhouses existing in the United States.
